Southern Italy; Second day, Capri

Port of Capri

In the morning of the second day, we were up early. We had a boat to catch to the beautiful island of Capri. Where the Caesars had Villas, and the sun seems to shine all the time.

5th Ave of Capri, our hotel was on the left.

Our stay would be short this time, only a night. We checked into the Best Western Hotel Syrene, it was nice and comfortable. The tiling in the room was very Capri (with lemons and the blue floral design. One issue is that you have to take the stairs from the street to the hotel every time. The great thing is that all the best shopping is in close proximity (Dior, Hermes, ect.). The rooms were available right away, so that was a big plus. We left our things and went to explore the island.

Villa Jovis

My parents tried to make the hike to Villa Jovis but it is a hard hike to do even when young, so they turned back. It was an interesting, mostly very steep, climb up to the Villa. The views from the top are worth the effort. You have a full view of the island and the surrounding area, the main peninsula can be easily seen from the top. Also you get to see a (ruined) Roman imperial palace. I had visited it 5 years before and they have actually cleaned it up, and more of the original features could be seen. A little about the Villa: Emperor Tiberius commissioned and completed it in CE (Common Era) 27. Tiberius enjoyed the island and mainly ruled from there until his death in CE 37.

As we descended, hunger took over, so we made plans to meet at Piazzetta with the parents. We were getting very close to the time when restaurants close for a siesta. My father hates the smell of seafood/fish so the restaurant had to be not specialized in fish. We settled on Ristorante Buca Di Bacco. Hey had brick oven pizza that was very good (this, coming from a New Yorker). The steak was good too (according to my husband). Even if my dad would complain about the fish, I love fish and being on an island I still got a fish dish. It was amazingly fresh and delicious. Unlike Naples the restaurants in Capri come with a hefty price tag, coperto (to basically sit and it, like a tip of sorts).

After our late lunch we ended up walking around and seeing the center of the island. Dior was a stop I wanted to make and it was disappointing, they did not have the mini Dior in the color I wanted and their selection was very small. The next stop: Louis Vuitton, I decided to give the brand a shot, and again I was disappointed, the Capucine BB was not well made. The flap did not latch on the front LV sign and was an easy bag to “break in to.” Overall I did not think the price of the bag to the quality was something I wanted in my collection.

More of Capri

Right across the street from the hotel is a decent gelato place and we took advantage. Bar Gelateria Embassy has an old timey feel and the service is ok. We continued walking and got to the Scoglio del Monacone. It is an interesting rock formation and a great place to take photos. The walk from the hotel was about 15 minutes, but it was an easy even walk with lots of shade.

Scoglio del Monacone

At the hotel we rested a bit and got ready for dinner. My dad shot down the fish restaurants again and we ended up going back to the hotel. My husband and I doubled back to the place we had lunch and picked up 2 pizza pies and 3 Cokes to bring back to the hotel. If you carry out, everything is half price! That was a bonus for us.

My mom and me

It was a very eventful day in Capri, until next time when we travel to Ischia!
