Southern Italy; Fifth day, Pompeii, and Amalfi Coast

Beautiful Amalfi Coast

The day of our tour arrived! We would see the wonders of the Amalfi coast, and the wonderfully tragic doomed Pompeii. The trip we booked was Pompeii and Amalfi coast Full-Day Tour: 8:30am (provider WorldTours).

First stop photo, you can see the mighty Vesuvius volcano in the background

Our tour first stopped by Sorrento; we took a few pictures of the breathtaking scenery. Of the many European countries, Italy has a treasure of amazing coasts, and fantastic cities and beautiful views.

More of the Amalfi Coast

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and told us interesting incidences and history snippets throughout the tour. They brought us to a lemonccielo factory; they gave us a tour, the history, the process, and samples in the gift shop (it was a nice stop, but it is clear that the tour company gets something from the owners to bring more guests to the factory).

The spot where I got the spices

There was a tiny stop in Positano, a few minutes to take some pictures. I also bought some spices that I really enjoyed when I got back home (I used it to make our turkey for Thanksgiving).

Lunch view

A bit down the road we stopped and the tour provided lunch. The lunch was simple, but good (salad, pasta, and soft drink). I decided to pay extra and got a Bronzino, on the coast the fish is fresh and delicious, it did not disappoint! The meal was good and on our way we went.

Amalfi city

Next stop was Amalfi. The city is beautiful, located on the mountainside. We enjoyed our extended stop in this city. Duomo di Sant’Andrea Apostolo, Amalfi cathedral is beautiful and very nice pictures can be taken in the front plaza. They take a fee to go in and see the church; we chose to spend our money on gelato. Unfortunately, the gelato was good (like most ice-cream is), but not great.

One of my favorite shots from Pompeii

The best was saved for last! Our mini bus arrived in Pompeii. In Pompeii we got earphones and radio receivers to listen to our guide, she was fantastic! The entire group raved about her. She took us to the mini amphitheater, a shopkeeper’s store, a wealthy citizen’s house, the bathhouse (which was surprisingly well intact), a meeting area, and bordello, to name a few. She showed us how to find a bordello (by the penises on the ground), pointing to the left. One of the most interesting things is the citizens of Pompeii; they were preserved by a plaster/cement technique. On display at this time were a dog, a child, and a grown man (most of the sculpture people are on loan to other countries for exhibitions).

Pompeii, the most intact ancient Roman city

Our wonderful tour ended and they took the other people on the trip to the ship (they came from a cruise ship), and then they dropped us off at our hotel. After a long and wonderful day, we chose to stay put and eat in the hotel (the food was okay, it would have been better to not be lazy and walk a few feet to a local restaurant).

Caio till next post!
